Themes in the Drakenaarde Chronicles

Jake the Dragon Talker (Book 1) – This story is about discovering your own identity and becoming comfortable in your own skin, as well as learning that uncomfortable situations help you grow. When Jake is first put in a terribly uncomfortable place, where everything is dirty and nothing is familiar, he wants to freeze up and give up. But he pushes himself into an adventure and learns that he has gifts and talents he never dreamed of, and that he is capable of much more than he thought.

Xander the Shadow Girl (Book 2) – This story is about the desire to fit in and fly under the radar, not standing out or being unique in ways that could prove embarrassing. Xander loses her identity for a time as she listens to and believes the lies told to her. When she remembers who she is, she must fight, even though there is little hope that she will win. She faces fear and uncertainty and deals with anger. Finally, she learns that being herself is far better than trying to be someone else.

Owen and Emelina (Book 3) – This story is about faith, the belief in things unseen, and the desire to grow up and go somewhere – anywhere – else. Owen is a scientist, firmly convinced that there are provable reasons and explanations behind everything. Jake’s tales of another world are interesting, but they don’t sink in until Owen goes there himself, and his entire belief system is challenged. Emelina feels like an outsider. She yearns for adventure and is eager to find her people, a desire that gets in the way of appreciating the people right in front of her. It also gets her in big trouble. Both children learn that there is more to life than they believe, and they don’t have to search far and wide to find it.

Giffy and the Sea People (Book 4) – This story is about the power of love. Giffy’s life has been marked by loss, adversity, and terror. The ocean took away his best friend, his family, and it keeps trying to drag him under and drown him. Giffy can’t get away from the sea, no matter how hard he tries. But his love for his friends gives him the courage to explore the depths and challenge his fears. Giffy’s big love and fierce loyalty transforms those around him and changes the trajectory of their plans.
